The market price shown here refers to iridium in industrial form (sponge, powder, or mesh), as traded between refiners and industrial buyers. Physical bars require additional processing steps — purification, sintering, and certification. That of course makes them more expensive and therefore bars trade at a premium.

Learn more about the MetaMetals marketplaceFactors driving the iridium price
The iridium price is influenced by several unique factors that distinguish it from other precious metals.
Industrial demand
Iridium is a key catalyst in PEM electrolysis for hydrogen production. Growing demand for green hydrogen is steadily driving up the need for iridium. It is also used in high-performance electronics and spark plugs.
Extreme scarcity
With annual global production of only 7–8 tonnes, iridium is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust. It is a byproduct of platinum mining, meaning supply depends directly on platinum extraction and cannot be increased independently.
Geopolitical risks
Over 80% of global iridium production comes from South Africa. This extreme concentration makes the market vulnerable to supply disruptions from labour strikes, energy issues, or political instability in the region.
Rising demand for green hydrogen could multiply iridium consumption in the coming decades. With supply extremely limited, analysts see significant upside potential.
Iridium as a physical investment
Iridium is one of the hardest and most corrosion-resistant metals in the world. As an investment metal, it offers a natural hedge against inflation and geopolitical risks. Limited availability and rising industrial demand make it an attractive long-term investment.
