How are precious metal bars produced? Casting and sintering of precious metals
Precious metal bars are produced in different ways, depending on the metal. The production method depends on the chemical properties of each precious metal. For example, due to the lower melting point and softness of the precious metals gold, silver and platinum, ingots can simply be cast and shaped into the desired form. With brittle and particularly dense precious metals of the platinum group, such as iridium, palladium, osmium, rhodium and ruthenium, however, it is not easy to cast the ingots. The starting material for these platinum metals is usually in powder form, which is often highly flammable and has a particularly high melting point. In the case of platinum metal ingots, the ingots are produced by "sintering". If an ingot has been sintered, this means that the raw material of the precious metal (ruthenium, iridium, palladium, rhodium, osmium, ...) is pressed into the appropriate shape, which is done using heat and high pressure. For some platinum metals (such as rhodium), cold forging can also be used instead of the usual sintering process to achieve the ingot shape.
